So. The Judeo-Christian holidays are here and/or arriving- depending on what part of the world you live in. Here in America, we begin by celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow.
And, generally, the arrival of the holidays means the arrival of stress. Of course, there is stress about the holiday (whatever one is coming up) but there’s also stress about family interactions, travel, money, expectations, activities (whose calendar is already filled for December?), and about 500 other things. Including food.
So I’m gonna give it to you straight about food this holiday season:
ENJOY THE FXCK OUT OF IT.
Okay? Just enjoy it.
Here is the thing- when we stress out, certain things happen in our body:
- Breathing rates increase
- Logic decreases
- Digestion slows
- Blood pressure goes up
- Saliva production slows
- Cortisol levels increase
- Glucose gets released into the bloodstream
Each of these things has a really useful purpose when we’re under physical stress, like when a bear is chasing us in the woods, or we’re almost in a car accident. But these things are rather unhelpful when we’re just eating.
When we’re just eating, these things actually make it harder for us to digest food and for the food we do digest to be used for basic upkeep and the nighttime repair routines. Basically, when we’re stressed, our food gets turned into fat more easily.
Which stinks, yes! But there is a way around it.
And that is to enjoy the fxck out of your food.
Seriously, if you love the turkey, the gravy, the sweet potatoes with the marshmallows on top, the freaking p-i-e, then go for it, my friends. Eat it and love it and have the best time ever with that food.
You know why? Because if you eat it without being stressed- if you Eat While Happy- your body is going to process it so much better. There will be better digestion, better saliva production, less glucose in your blood, and the food will be tastier.
And tasting the food is such a gift. Why do we even celebrate any holiday with special food? Because it tastes good. The whole thing is a sensual pleasurefest. The colors of the food, the smells coming from the oven, the tastes as we ‘check’ on things to see if they’re done, the feel of warm dishes in your hand- there is so much joy to be had there. So, please, enjoy it.
One thing I will also say to my Sex Surge ladies is that the energy of the Surge (if you look at it from 10,000 feet up) is about creativity and connection. And if you need a place to ‘spend’ some of the energy you feel, putting it into creating a sensual holiday, is a great way to work with it. Put love and sensuality into the food– what would taste, look, and smell wonderful? You can do the same with the decorating-what is beautiful to you, what brings you alive with energy? And if there is someone you can innocently flirt with while you make dinner (a baby? a family friend? the dog?) then more’s the better. Don’t shut yourself down during the holidays- let them be doorways for your sensual energy to flow through.
The holidays are stressful, yes, no way around that. But let’s only put stress where it rightfully belongs, and what you are eating and enjoying is not a place stress belongs. Love these special times- and live them as fully as you can.
