Music is one of the most special things on Earth to me. It is sacred + joyful + truth (even when I’m sad) – all rolled up into one. Music is lifeblood for me. And I make playlists just about every month to suit where I am, who I am, and where I’m going.
So, today I wanted to share some songs that I think are reflective of the mid-life experience. Let me know what you think in the comments. And please (please!) feel free to share songs that have gotten you through something important or a song about who you are now. Your sharing means we all get to learn and enjoy more.
Private Party | India.Arie | Testimony: Vol 1. Life & Relationship
Love this song. About not pitying ourselves, but instead, loving ourselves right up. And body acceptance, too. Yes.
Bitch | Meredith Brooks | Blurring the Edges
Now that I’m at mid-life, I know who I am. I’m all things, all the faces of the feminine. Pieces I like, pieces I don’t. But I’m still more whole, knowing the pieces exist within me.
Good Mother | Jann Arden | Living Under June
This song reminds me where I come from- good people. And how women become, over and over again:
of all the people I have been/
With all the rusted, tangled, dented, goddamn miseries.’
I Wanna Be Sedated | The Ramones | Road to Ruin
If you have not felt like this at mid-life, kudos. But I know, for certain, there are days when being sedated sounds like the most amazing idea ever to the rest of us.
Kiss This | The Struts | Everybody Wants
This is kind of a new favorite for me. I dig that it’s about finally putting up boundaries that work..and also telling the other person to fuck off. Play this very loud when you’re mad at someone; it makes it better.
Blackbird | Sarah McLachlan | Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff: Vol. 2
When the blinders get taken off and we see the truth…about ourselves. Broken but fine. Dented but beautiful. Know this at mid-life: even messy you’re lovely, so very lovely.
Let It Go | James Bay | Chaos and the Calm
How many of us let go of our marriage by mid-life? A lot. The break is usually necessary but painful, nonetheless. I’ve not divorced, but I’ve let a lot of relationships go and this song lets my cry the ugly cry every time.
Beautiful | Mali Music | Mali Is…
I love this song for these lyrics, right here:
I put my lighter in the air for you/
I see whatch’u doing, yeah I see whatch’u go through/
Put my lighter in the air, the truth is you’re beautiful, beautiful/
Now put your lighter in the air for us/
Everybody singin’ together, sing a new song/
Put your lighter in the air for love is beautiful, beautiful
I’ll Stand By You | Pretenders | Last of the Independents
Who have you stood by all these years? Who has stood by you? The best friends, the gal pals, the girl gang. Probably the biggest gift of a woman’s life is someone who will stand by her. Love those people up.
(Who do you need to call and reconnect with?)
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, and it’s from my own psyche (so that says a lot!). What would you add? Please share in the comments, below.
So much love,
Joanna :: xoxo
